Desktop Archival Research

The Desktop Archival Research is a review of the relevant literature and fact-finding search. It brings together a range of reports, academic studies and research publications, as well as recent university reviews carried out in the area of languages. Documenting results of this research provides an understanding of:

  • What is happening in Australia in the provision of languages and how it compares to other countries?
  • What collaborative activities have been, or are being, implemented in the provision of languages.

Online Survey

An online survey administered at all Australian universities aimed to document and quantify:

  • What languages are being offered, the qualification level and type, and at what campuses.
  • What collaborative activities have been, or are being, undertaken.
  • What made course provision, teaching, and learning outcomes successful or not.

Interviews with Stakeholders

Interviews were held with key gatekeepers (teaching academics, student administration, Deans, higher education policy makers) involved in universities with collaborations in languages provision. The interviews aimed to:

  • To pursue, in-depth, issues linked to current and planned collaborations
  • To apply the 'Factors' identified in Lo Bianco and Gvozdenko (2006) in relation to the experiences and praxis of current, and planned, collaborations.
  • To identify and analyse the implications of, and the applications for, the Collaborative Models proposed for the Trials 2007-2008.

Private Providers and Community Languages

The Project focussed on private providers collaboration with universities in delivering language courses that are nationally accredited under the Australian Quality Training Framework. Courses included those offered in government-funded institutes of technical and further education (TAFE), by other government-sponsored agencies and commercial arms of educational institutions, or by privately owned businesses.
